Limited “First to Finnish" Edition Kimi Raikkonen 2012 Lotus F1 Team Bodywork & Photo

The 2007 World Champion, Kimi Raikkonen, had spent the previous two seasons on the sidelines – trying his hand at World Rally – but by 2012 the Finnish legend was ready to make his return to F1.

With none of the top teams having a space open, the ‘Iceman’ signed for Lotus F1 Team, the team which finished fifth in the Constructors championship the season before. Nevertheless, it was a space on the grid for Raikkonen to make his return.

The fourth round of the season was the Bahrain GP – and Kimi had a relatively underwhelming qualifying performance which saw him start the grid in 11th place. Not one to be put off by an uphill battle, the Sunday pace of Raikkonen’s #9 Lotus was on a completely different level to Saturday. The Finn stormed through the field, all the way to a fantastic 2nd place finish to properly mark his return top F1.

Finnish drivers have an incredible record in F1 – even though there have been less than 10 Finnish drivers in F1, the small Nordic nation ranks an incredible 6th on the list of all-time wins. They may not produce many F1 drivers, but they do produce some great ones!

After the Bahrain GP, Raikkonen got a taste for taking his Lotus to the podium. He finished in the top 3, a further five times, before the Abu Dhabi GP. Raikkonen qualified fourth for the Grand Prix – but managed to make it forward to take the lead of the GP. In the last five laps, Alonso closed right up to the back of Raikkonen. Kimi, ever the no-nonsense individual, got frustrated with his engineer’s reminders of the gap to Alonso – leading to the hilarious & iconic “LEAVE ME ALONE, I KNOW WHAT TO DO” radio message.

The Iceman did know what to do; bringing his Lotus home to finish first. Not only that but Kimi’s race win & seven podiums meant he would finish the season 3rd in the championship. Not bad for a mid-field team. Not bad.
